Locate and Turn Off Your Water Source
a) Turning off the source valve could save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in repairs.
b) Many of the plumbing fixtures have an accessible individual shut off valve.
c) Toilets and faucets will have a shut off valve either coming out of the wall, or under the cabinet.
d) If your water heater is leaking, check the top of the heater for the shut off valve.
Small vs Large Leaks
a) If you are having a small leak, you will be able to shut off the water valves yourself.
b) If you find the area covered in more than 1” of water, you might consider contacting your water company to have them shut off your water meter. This will not cost you, and could prevent additional water damage to your home.
Contact Your Plumbers
a) First and foremost, stay calm. Remember, your emergency is an every day occurrence for your plumbers.
b) When the plumbers arrive, explain the situation calmly and concisely.
c) If the leak is in a cabinet, if possible, try and have the cabinet cleared out before your plumbers arrive. This will save time, and you want us to spend time on the repairs, not emptying out your cabinets. Remember – time is money.
Clean Up Items
a) Additional problems can result from standing water, so try and clean up the water as quickly as possible.
b) A shop vac is the best way to soak up excess water. If you don’t have one, check with your neighbors.
c) When using the shop vac, be sure to drain it either outside or in a bathtub or sink not effected by the water leak. And always remember to never use a shop vac if the water is close to an electrical source.
d) If a shop vac is not handy, then towels, rags or a mop will help soak up the standing water.
